The Sacraments

First Holy Communion

The most intimate encounter with Christ this side of heaven — the first time a child receives his Body and Blood.

The Sacrament

What is the Holy Eucharist?

The Holy Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life — the sacrament in which Jesus Christ is truly, really, and substantially present: Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. This is not a symbol or a mere representation. It is the living Lord himself, as truly as he was present to his disciples at the Last Supper.

First Holy Communion is the threshold moment when a child receives the Eucharist for the very first time. It is one of the most profound moments in a Catholic life — a day that children (and their parents) typically remember for the rest of their lives.

At Madonna Ministry, we take First Holy Communion preparation seriously — not to create an administrative hurdle, but because we want every child to understand and appreciate what they are receiving. We prepare the whole child: mind, heart, and soul.

Who It's For

Is My Child Ready?

Children in Year 3+

Our programme is designed for children aged 7–8 and above (Year 3 and above). Children must have been baptised Catholic. If your child is older and has not yet received First Communion, please contact us — we will arrange an appropriate pathway.

Families

First Holy Communion is a family sacrament. We ask parents to be involved in the preparation, attending dedicated parent sessions and supporting their child's growth in faith at home throughout the year.

Adults

Adults who have been baptised but have not yet received First Holy Communion are warmly welcomed. Our adult programme runs alongside the RCIA journey and culminates in reception of Communion at the Easter Vigil.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What age does a child need to be?+

The Church asks that children are of 'the age of reason' — generally understood as around seven years old. Our programme is for children in Year 3 (age 7–8) and above. Older children and adults who have not yet received their First Communion are equally welcome — please contact us to discuss arrangements.

Does my child need to have been baptised Catholic?+

Yes — Baptism is the prerequisite for all the other sacraments. If your child has not yet been baptised, please contact us about Baptism first.

How long is the preparation programme?+

Our First Holy Communion programme runs from September to May, meeting on Sunday mornings after the 9:00 am Mass. This gives children time to grow in understanding and relationship with the Eucharist, not just tick a box.

Do parents need to attend sessions?+

Yes — we ask parents to attend a number of dedicated parent sessions throughout the year. First Holy Communion is not just about the child; it is a family moment of faith. Parents are the primary catechists of their children, and we want to support you in that role.

What should my child wear?+

White or cream clothing is traditional for First Holy Communion — symbolising the white garment of Baptism. Girls often wear white dresses and veils; boys typically wear white shirts with dark trousers, or a white or cream suit. Smart and modest is the guide. Please do not feel that expensive clothing is required.

A Day to Treasure Forever

First Holy Communion is one of the most precious days in a Catholic family's life. We would be honoured to celebrate it with you.
