About Our Parish

Our History

The story of Madonna Ministry — shaped by faith, sustained by grace, and written by the lives of countless ordinary people.

Our Story

Over seventy years of faith and community.

The history of Madonna Ministry is not primarily a story of buildings and institutions. It is a story of people — of families who prayed together, of priests who gave their lives in service, of converts who found their home, and of ordinary men and women who encountered the living God and were changed.

From a small gathering in a schoolroom to a flourishing parish family, the thread running through every chapter of our history is the same: the Eucharist, celebrated faithfully, week after week, year after year.

Parish Timeline

Milestones in Our Story

  1. 1952

    Foundation

Madonna Ministry was formally established as a parish by the Diocese, responding to the rapid growth of the local Catholic community. The founding congregation of approximately sixty families gathered initially in a converted schoolroom, guided by their first Parish Priest, Father Thomas Maguire.

  2. 1958

    The Church is Built

After six years of fundraising — including substantial contributions from Irish and Polish immigrant families — the current church building was consecrated. Designed in a traditional English style, it seats 320 and features stained glass windows depicting the Mysteries of the Rosary.

  3. 1965

    Second Vatican Council Reforms

The parish embraced the liturgical reforms of the Second Vatican Council with prayerful deliberateness. The sanctuary was reconfigured, the Mass was celebrated in English for the first time, and a new spirit of lay involvement in parish life began to flourish.

  4. 1972

    Parish School Established

A long-held dream was realised when the Diocese approved the establishment of a Catholic primary school affiliated with the parish. The school quickly became a beloved part of the community and today educates over three hundred children in the Catholic faith and tradition.

  5. 1981

    First Permanent Deacon Ordained

Following the restoration of the permanent diaconate after the Second Vatican Council, Madonna Ministry celebrated the ordination of its first permanent deacon, Deacon Francis Adebayo, whose ministry of charity and service to the local community became a cornerstone of parish life.

  6. 1993

    Parish Hall Renovated

Generous donations from parishioners enabled a major renovation of the parish hall, creating a flexible community space used for everything from catechism classes and youth groups to Mothers' Prayers and the parish annual dinner.

  7. 2000

    Jubilee Year Pilgrimage to Rome

To mark the Great Jubilee, a group of seventy-five parishioners made a pilgrimage to Rome, attending an audience with Pope John Paul II. The journey deepened the parish's sense of belonging to the universal Church and inspired a renewed commitment to prayer.

  8. 2008

Golden Jubilee of the Church Building

The parish celebrated fifty years of the church building with a week of thanksgiving, including a solemn Mass celebrated by the Bishop, a historical exhibition, and the publication of a parish history booklet. The organ was also restored and rededicated.

  9. 2015

    Safeguarding Framework Strengthened

In line with national guidelines from the Catholic Bishops' Conference and the Diocese, the parish established a formal Safeguarding Committee, appointed a trained Parish Safeguarding Representative, and undertook a complete review of all safeguarding policies and procedures.

  10. 2019

    Live Stream Ministry Launched

Recognising the needs of housebound parishioners and those in hospital, the parish launched a live stream of Sunday Mass and major feast days via YouTube. This ministry proved invaluable during the challenges of subsequent years.

  11. 2020–2021

    Faith Through the Pandemic

Like parishes across the country, Madonna Ministry navigated the closure of public worship during the pandemic with creativity and pastoral care. Online Masses, virtual prayer groups, and a volunteer food delivery network ensured no parishioner was left alone.

  12. 2023

    Parish Renewal Programme

Building on the lessons of recent years, the parish launched a renewal programme focused on welcoming new parishioners, strengthening small faith communities, and deepening engagement with the local area through the parish's Caritas outreach work.

  13. Today

    A Living Parish

Madonna Ministry remains a vibrant, welcoming community of hundreds of families from many nations and backgrounds. Rooted in prayer, nourished by the sacraments, and called to service, we look forward with hope to all that God has prepared for us.
